How to Track and Present Your Own Impact

Why most people can't write a strong CV — not because they lack achievements, but because they never tracked them.

Ask someone what they contributed in their last role and most will describe their job description. That is not the same thing. A job description is what you were asked to do; impact is what changed because you did it.

The reason this is hard is almost never a lack of achievements. It is that nobody kept a record while the work was happening.

Keep an impact log

  • What you did, in one line
  • Why it was needed
  • What changed as a result — numbers where they exist, description where they do not
  • Who else was affected: your team, a client, the wider organisation

Turning records into CV lines

A strong CV line is an outcome with context attached. It reads as: this was the situation, this is what I did, this is what resulted. You cannot write that from memory six months later, but you can write it in thirty seconds from a log.

It is also how you ask for more

Promotion and rate conversations turn on evidence. If the record already exists, you are describing facts instead of arguing an opinion.

Next step

Start with the template, then build the habit.
