Job Searching: Platforms, Networking, and Standing Out

How to approach the job search process, from picking platforms to making your LinkedIn work for you.

Most job searching advice stops at 'apply widely'. That is the least effective part of the process, and the part everyone does. The search is really three separate activities: being findable, being credible, and applying deliberately.

Picking platforms

  • One general platform, one field-specific platform, and direct company career pages
  • Set up alerts rather than browsing at random
  • Read the posting closely enough to know what is actually being tested

Making your profile do work while you sleep

  • A headline that states what you can do, not only what you studied
  • A summary written for a reader who has never met you
  • Evidence: projects, results, contributions — anything specific

Networking without pretending

Networking is mostly asking clear, specific questions of people who do the work you want to do. It fails when the ask is vague. It works when the person can answer in two lines.

The skill underneath all of this is self-advocacy: reaching out before you feel qualified, and following up when nothing happens.

Next step

Want to build the self-advocacy side of this deliberately?
