Psychology is one of the most applied-for fields and one of the most misunderstood. The undergraduate degree is broad and accessible; the professional routes after it are narrow, competitive and tightly regulated. Knowing which gate stands in front of your intended direction matters more than any module list.
The university route
- An undergraduate major, then honours, then selection into a professional master's for registered practice
- Selection is competitive and capacity-limited at every stage
- Registration requirements are set by the regulator, not the university
Private college routes
- Accredited private providers offer psychology and counselling qualifications
- Check what the specific qualification allows you to register as, and with whom
- Confirm accreditation against the regulator's published information, not the prospectus
Industrial and organisational psychology
Industrial psychology sits closer to the world of work: assessment, organisational behaviour, people analytics and development. It is often a more direct route into employment than clinical or counselling paths, and it draws on research skill heavily.
Next step
Research skill sits underneath every one of these routes.
