What Can You Do With a BCom Degree?

A BCom is broad by design. Here is how to think about the directions it opens and how to narrow them.

A Bachelor of Commerce is a broad commerce qualification. That breadth is often sold as an advantage, and it can be — but only if you make decisions inside it. Two graduates with the same degree can leave with very different options depending on the majors they chose, the skills they built and the work they can show.

The degree is a foundation, not a job title

Commerce qualifications teach how organisations create, measure and manage value. Accounting, finance, economics, management, marketing, supply chain, information systems and human resources are common areas of specialisation, and each carries different expectations after graduation.

Some directions are gated by further requirements — professional designations, postgraduate study or specific accredited routes. Others are gated by evidence: whether you can actually do the work. Knowing which type of gate stands in front of your intended direction is more useful than a list of job titles.

Questions worth answering before you specialise

  • Does this direction require a professional designation or further study?
  • What does someone in this area actually do on an ordinary week?
  • What would prove to someone that I can do this work?
  • Which of my modules connect directly to that proof?

Narrowing without closing doors

Narrowing does not mean committing for life. It means choosing something specific enough to develop. Depth in one area teaches you how to build capability, and that skill transfers even if you later change direction.

The most common mistake is waiting until final year to think about it. By then the electives are chosen and there is little time left to build anything outside coursework.
