What Research Actually Involves

Research is a process with stages. Understanding them removes most of the early confusion.

Many students meet research for the first time as an assignment: a proposal, a literature review, a report. The vocabulary arrives faster than the understanding, and the result is work produced without knowing why any of it is required.

Research is a sequence, not a document

  • A question worth asking, narrow enough to answer
  • An honest reading of what is already known
  • A method chosen because it fits the question
  • Evidence gathered and handled responsibly
  • Analysis that could be checked by someone else
  • Writing that can be examined and defended

Why methodology gets so much attention

A method is the argument for why your evidence supports your conclusion. If the method does not fit the question, the findings cannot be trusted regardless of how much work went into them.

This is also why qualitative and quantitative approaches are not interchangeable styles. They answer different kinds of questions.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Choosing a method before settling the question
  • Treating the literature as decoration rather than argument
  • Collecting data before knowing how it will be analysed
  • Ignoring ethics until it becomes a form to submit
